Shifting from Acclaim to Rage: Right-wing Reaction to Jeffrey Epstein File Release is Divided.
Conservative reactions to the partial release of documents related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with some supporters of the previous administration highlighting the noticeable presence of former President Clinton and other Democratic figures in images, while different voices lamented how heavy redactions portray former President Trump and Republicans in a negative light.
Administration Justifies Censorship with Strong Hyperbole
Administration officials justified the redactions with intense hyperbole. “At no point in American the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been this transparent with the public about such a sensitive legal issue,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a six-page memo outlining the censorship process.
Questions Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's identity and likeness are visible in portions of the materials, the widespread black blocks prompt significant concerns about what may be concealed behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers swiftly called for increased openness.
“People are furious and walking away,” wrote Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship break the statute, and implied that a future legislature may move to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, this document release egregiously does not adhere to both the spirit and the letter of the act,” he added.
Some Conservative Commentators Swing Behind the Release
But, a segment of rightwing commentators and Trump loyalists came out strongly in support of the administration.
The release—from a justice department led by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains scores of pages that are completely redacted, and many of the men depicted in photographs have their identities blacked out.
Yet a few are not, featuring high-profile individuals like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, in particular, enabled some conservative figures to go on the attack.
“This is pretty rich how the Democrats wrongly claimed President Trump of being a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to release Epstein files that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” stated conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released documents show Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a woman that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one reason Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a girl in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Clinton Spokesperson Releases Statement
Bill Clinton has consistently stated he knew of zero criminal activity by Epstein and has never been accused to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The administration hasn’t been hiding these documents for an extended period only to dump them at the last minute on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“This is about shielding officials from what comes next, or from information they will try and conceal permanently. Therefore they can publicize as many grainy decades-old photos as they desire, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the statement concluded.
Overall Conservative Commentary Seems Muted
Nonetheless, overall comment on the political right was relatively muted after the disclosure, especially when juxtaposed against the vociferous demands for action that preceded the congressional approval to pass a bill requiring the documents' release.
The commentator, who not long ago secured media access at the Defense Department, had been one of the loudest proponents for a full release. In February, she chastised the Justice Department generally and Bondi in particular after a set of conservative influencers were provided hard-copy binders of materials that contained little new information.
