Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Medications Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Than Dieters
A recent study indicates that patients who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a leading medical journal shows that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals purchasing such drugs must be informed of the danger of fast weight regain when the medication ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.
Weighing Treatments
The research, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
The team note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Doctors propose the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the accelerated rebound.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Chronic Disease?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Accounts
Users who have stopped the jabs report a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a trigger activating and you become extremely hungry," described an individual.
This challenge is worsened if individuals have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Significant Interest
Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is higher among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers caution that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural changes.
